Privacy policy
Effective October 5, 2026
Amud is a free siddur, zmanim and learning app. It works on your device: the prayers, the calendar and zmanim, your reminders and the voice features are all computed there. There is no account, no advertising, and nothing you enter in the app is sent anywhere. The one thing it sends by default is anonymous usage statistics, which you can turn off.
What stays on your device
- Settings and choices: your nusach, text versions, minhagim, layout and the rest.
- Your location. Amud uses it only to calculate zmanim and the calendar. It is saved on the device and never sent anywhere. You can choose a city from the built-in list instead of sharing your location.
- Reminders, which the app schedules with your device's notifications.
- Personal dates (yahrzeits, birthdays and similar), custom siddur rules, home-screen cards, imported fonts and your learning progress.
- Voice. Speech recognition runs on the device with a downloaded speech model. Audio from the microphone is never recorded to a file or sent anywhere.
- Searches and anything else you type.
Uninstalling Amud, or clearing its data in your device's settings, deletes all of it.
Anonymous usage statistics
To learn which parts of the app are used and fix problems, Amud sends anonymous usage statistics to Google Analytics (through Google Analytics for Firebase on Android, iOS, macOS and the web, and directly on Windows and Linux). This is on by default. You can turn it off any time in Settings → Share anonymous usage, or during first-run setup, and then nothing more is sent.
- What is sent
- Which screens and features are opened, which prayers or texts are read, which settings are changed and to what, a count of active days and months, the type of any error, and the app version, device type, operating system and language.
- What is never sent
- Anything you type, your name or contact details, your personal dates, your exact location (only the country of a chosen location), or your advertising ID. Ad personalization is turned off.
- No identifier that follows you
- Amud sets no user ID and starts a fresh random ID each time the app opens, so one session can't be linked to the next or to you.
- Google receives these events like any other request, including your IP address, which Google Analytics uses to estimate a country or city and does not store. Google processes the data as described in Google's privacy policy and how Google Analytics safeguards data. Amud only sees aggregate reports.
When Amud connects to the internet
The siddur, zmanim, calendar and Tehillim are built into the app and work offline. Amud goes online only for the following, and sends nothing about you beyond what any web request carries (such as your IP address):
- Torah texts you choose to download in the Torah tab, and Shnayim Mikra, from Sefaria.
- The speech model for voice features, downloaded once from Hugging Face when you turn them on.
- Extra fonts you choose to download, from Google Fonts' repository on GitHub.
- Home-screen cards you add yourself, which may load data from the addresses they were written for.
- Release notes and updates. The version downloaded from GitHub checks GitHub for new versions. The Google Play version asks Google Play instead, through the Play Store app on your device.
Links you tap, such as to GoDaven, Sefaria, or GitHub to report a mistake in a text, open in your browser and are covered by those sites' own policies.
Permissions
- Location
- To calculate zmanim where you are, and optionally to suggest updating your location when you travel. Only while the app is in use, and optional.
- Microphone
- For voice features, processed on the device. Optional.
- Notifications, alarms and starting at boot
- To show the reminders you set, at the right time, and to restore them after the device restarts. Exact alarms are optional: without them, reminders may arrive a few minutes late.
- Do Not Disturb access
- Optional, to silence the phone while you are reading and turn it back on afterwards.
The web app
The web app at amud.page/app/ works the same way and keeps its data in your browser. If you turn on push reminders there, the reminders you set (their times and text) and your browser's push address are stored on Amud's server under a random token, with no name or account, so they can be delivered while the page is closed. They are deleted once sent or when you turn the reminders off.
Children
Amud doesn't ask for or knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
